History
The early settlers in the Gurnee area arrived by foot, horseback, and “Prairie Schooners” drawn by oxen. The region was initially named “Wentworth” after Congressman “Long John” Wentworth. However, it was later renamed “Gurnee” in honor of Walter S. Gurnee, the 14th Mayor of Chicago. The village has a rich history, with landmarks such as the Mother Rudd House, which served as a stagecoach stop and a part of the underground railroad. In May 2004, Gurnee experienced its worst flooding in 100 years, affecting several schools and causing significant damage to homes and businesses.

Gurnee covers a total area of 13.576 square miles, with 99.44% being land and 0.56% water. The village is situated on the banks of the Des Plaines River and is bisected by Interstate 94, dividing it into the east (old) and west (new) sides.
