The early settlers in the Gurnee area arrived by foot, horseback, and “Prairie Schooners” drawn by oxen. The region was initially named “Wentworth” after Congressman “Long John” Wentworth. However, it was later renamed “Gurnee” in honor of Walter S. Gurnee, the 14th Mayor of Chicago. The village has a rich history, with landmarks such as the Mother Rudd House, which served as a stagecoach stop and a part of the underground railroad. In May 2004, Gurnee experienced its worst flooding in 100 years, affecting several schools and causing significant damage to homes and businesses.

Gurnee covers a total area of 13.576 square miles, with 99.44% being land and 0.56% water. The village is situated on the banks of the Des Plaines River and is bisected by Interstate 94, dividing it into the east (old) and west (new) sides.

Economy and Tourism

Gurnee is a hub for tourism, with attractions like Six Flags Great America, which was the 20th most visited amusement park in North America in 2021. Gurnee Mills, opened in 1991, is one of the largest malls in Illinois. Additionally, the Great Wolf Lodge resort, with its indoor waterpark, adds to the village’s appeal.

Gurnee is served by two main school districts: Gurnee School District #56 and Woodland Grade School District #50. The village also houses Warren Township High School, which has two campuses.

While Interstate 94 provides easy access to Milwaukee and Chicago, Gurnee is one of the few major Chicago suburbs not serviced by Metra. However, nearby stations are available in Waukegan, Grayslake, and Libertyville.
