History

Founded in July 1901 by John Alexander Dowie, a Scots-Australian evangelical minister, Zion was initially a faith-based community. Dowie had a large faith healing business in Chicago before he bought land to establish Zion. The city was named after Mount Zion in Israel and was unique in that Dowie personally owned all of the land and most businesses.
