Plaster walls are solid, quiet, and built to last. They are also 60 to 100 years old in most homes that still have them. That means cracks, loose sections, water stains, and spots where the plaster has pulled away from the lath behind it.
Tearing it all out and replacing it with drywall is one option, but it is expensive, messy, and destroys the character of the home. Fixing cracks
Cracks are the most common issue. Plaster cracks for a lot of reasons: the house settles, humidity changes, temperature swings cause expansion and contraction, or the keys (the plaster fingers that grip the lath) have broken loose. We dig out the crack, apply a bonding agent, and fill it with a plaster-compatible compound. For cracks that keep coming back, we embed fiberglass mesh tape to bridge the movement.
Stabilizing loose plaster
Loose plaster is trickier. When you press on the wall and it flexes or sounds hollow, the plaster has separated from the lath. If we catch it early, we can reattach it. We drill small holes, inject construction adhesive behind the plaster, and use temporary screws and washers to hold it flat against the lath while the adhesive cures. Once it sets, we remove the screws, fill the holes, and skim over the surface.
Patching damaged sections
For sections that are too far gone. Crumbling, water-soaked, or missing entirely. We cut out the damaged area and patch it. We can patch with fresh plaster for a traditional repair or use a drywall insert if the area is large and the wall behind it allows for it. Either way, we match the surrounding surface so the patch blends in.
Skim coating and texture matching
Skim coating is how we bring an old plaster wall back to a smooth, paintable surface. We apply a thin layer of finishing compound over the entire wall or ceiling, then sand it to a uniform finish. This covers minor imperfections, old repairs, and uneven texture without replacing the plaster underneath.
Texture matching is important in homes with decorative plaster work. Sand-finish plaster, swirl textures, and stipple patterns are common in pre-war homes. We replicate the existing texture on any patch so the repair does not stand out. For homes with plaster ceiling medallions, crown mold, or archway details, we repair the existing work rather than replacing it.
Priming and timeline
After all repairs are complete, we prime the surface with a high-adhesion primer designed for plaster. Plaster absorbs paint differently than drywall, so the right primer makes a big difference in how the finish coat looks.
A single room with typical cracking and a few loose spots takes one to two days. Larger projects. Full skim coating a room or repairing water damage across a ceiling. May take three to four days. We work clean and protect everything in the room before we start.

In most cases, repair is the better option. Plaster walls are thicker, denser, and more soundproof than drywall. Tearing them out creates a huge mess, generates debris, and often reveals other problems (old wiring, no insulation) that add cost.
