Wheeling is a village located primarily in Cook County, Illinois, and is a northwest suburb of Chicago. With a population of 38,499, Wheeling offers a blend of suburban living and historical richness. The village was named after Wheeling, West Virginia, and was originally controlled by the United Indian Nations which included the Illini and Kickapoo tribes, in the early 1680s.


The land that is now Wheeling was initially controlled by the United Indian Nations in the early 1680s. The area was later inhabited by the French-allied Potawatomi tribe in the 1700s. The first cabin in Wheeling Township was built by Mr. Sweet in 1833, making him the first permanent resident. The village has evolved over the years, with the first tavern-hotel opening in 1834 and a general store and trading post in 1837. Wheeling was officially incorporated as a village later on.
